History
A note from Jeff Pope (owner of Rakes and Ladders):
“In the early 90's working as the Night Manager, at the Hotel Vancouver a friend and I were looking to start something up. I had enjoyed working outside during summers growing up in Ottawa. We decided to start a gardening company knowing just the basics and figuring it out as we went, always learning, trying new things, and being given opportunities.
I started with a $500 1969 Ford F 150 with my girlfriend at the time. I hand painted the sign which we created a fun funky font for, and had a giant "brick" mobile phone which I only used after 6pm, calls were free. Working night shifts at the Hotel and days doing Rakes and Ladders with little sleep, I was determined to make a go of it!
After a year or so I switched to part-time at the hotel. Vancouver was very different then, it was cheap to live and you could work a few days a week to pay rent. This allowed me to focus on Rakes and Ladders and make it grow into a successful business that it is today.
